Prayers for Enemies

Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you — the most radical command and the most transforming prayer.

A Prayer to Bless Those Who Oppose You

Lord Jesus, You commanded something that goes against every natural instinct in my body. Matthew 5:44 says to love my enemies and pray for those who persecute me. I do not want to, Lord. Everything in me wants to fight back, to wish them harm, to see them pay for what they have done. But I am choosing obedience over instinct today. So here I am, praying for the person who has hurt me. I ask You to bless them — not because they deserve it, but because You blessed me when I did not deserve it either. Open their eyes to see You. Soften their heart the way You have softened mine. Romans 12:19-21 tells me not to take revenge but to leave room for Your justice. I am stepping back and letting You handle this. Proverbs 25:21-22 says that kindness toward an enemy is like heaping burning coals on their head. I choose kindness, even though it costs me my pride. Change their heart, Lord, and in the process, change mine. Free me from the prison of bitterness. Amen.

A Prayer for God's Justice

Father, I have been wronged and the injustice burns in my soul. I want vindication. I want the person who hurt me to face consequences. And I believe that desire for justice is not wrong — You are a God of justice. But Romans 12:19-21 tells me clearly: "Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath." The problem is not wanting justice; the problem is trying to be the judge and executioner myself. So I surrender this situation to Your courtroom, Lord. You see every detail, every hidden motive, every lie spoken in secret. Psalm 23:5 says You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. I do not have to defeat them; I just have to sit at Your table and trust that Your provision speaks louder than their opposition. Matthew 5:44 calls me to pray for those who persecute me, and so I pray — not for their destruction, but for Your will to be done. Bring justice, Lord, but also bring mercy wherever it is possible. I trust Your judgment over my own. Amen.

A Prayer for Freedom from Bitterness

God, I have been carrying bitterness toward the people who have wronged me, and it is poisoning my life. The resentment has moved in like an unwanted tenant, taking up space in my thoughts, my prayers, and my peace. I replay the offense over and over, rehearsing what I should have said, imagining confrontations that never happen. But Proverbs 25:21-22 challenges me with a radical response: feed my enemy when they are hungry, give them water when they are thirsty. That is the opposite of what my flesh wants to do. But I recognize that my bitterness hurts me far more than it hurts them. Matthew 5:44 is Your prescription for a poisoned heart — pray for those who persecute you. So I am praying, Lord. Not because I feel like it, but because obedience precedes feelings. Romans 12:19-21 reminds me not to be overcome by evil but to overcome evil with good. Help me choose goodness today. Uproot the bitterness before it grows any deeper. I release this person into Your hands and ask You to release me from their grip on my heart. Amen.

A Prayer When You Face Opposition

Lord, I am facing opposition from people who want to see me fail, and it is wearing me down. Their words are sharp, their actions are deliberate, and some days I wonder if I have the strength to keep going. But Psalm 23:5 gives me an image I need right now: You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. I do not have to run from them or fight them. I just have to sit down at Your table and let You be God. Matthew 5:44 asks me to love these people. That feels impossible in my own strength, but Your Spirit makes the impossible possible. I pray for them now — that You would work in their hearts, reveal their own brokenness, and bring them to a place of peace. Romans 12:19-21 instructs me to leave vengeance to You and overcome evil with good. Give me creative ways to respond with grace that disarms the hostility aimed at me. Proverbs 25:21-22 promises that unexpected kindness has power. Use me as an instrument of that power. Protect me, Lord, but also protect my character in the process. Amen.
