Lord, my friend just got the worst news of their life and they are in shock. The world has tilted on its axis and nothing feels real. They are numb and shattered at the same time, and I do not know what to say because there is nothing I can say that will fix this. So I am coming to You. Psalm 46:1 says You are our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Be ever-present right now. Not in cliches or greeting card theology but in Your raw, real, uncomfortable nearness. Hold them up because their legs cannot. Think for them because their mind cannot. Breathe for them because their lungs feel like they have forgotten how. Help me to just be there without trying to explain or fix or theologize. Help me to sit in the ashes with them the way Job's friends did before they started talking. Just sit. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Father, my friend is angry at You, and honestly I understand why. They did everything right. They prayed. They believed. And still, the worst thing happened. I know You are big enough to handle their anger—the Psalms are full of people who screamed at You and You did not turn away. Psalm 22:1 says, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Even Jesus quoted those words on the cross. So do not let my friend feel guilty for their rage. Meet them in it. Let them pound on Your chest the way a child pounds on a parent's chest and then hold them when they have nothing left. Do not let this grief become a wall between them and You. Let it become a door—a door to a deeper, more honest relationship than they have ever had with You. They are not running from You by being angry. They are running toward You. Catch them. In Jesus' name, Amen.
God, the world has moved on but my friend has not. The casseroles stopped coming weeks ago. The phone calls have thinned out. People have stopped asking how they are. But the grief is not done with them. In some ways it has gotten harder because now the shock has worn off and the reality has set in. Revelation 21:4 promises a day when You will wipe every tear from their eyes and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain. That day is coming, but it is not today. And today hurts. I am asking You to sustain them in the long middle of grief. Give them grace for the holidays, the birthdays, the anniversaries, and the random Tuesdays that hit like a truck for no reason. Help me to keep showing up when everyone else has stopped. Let me be the friend who remembers and mentions the name everyone else avoids. Do not let them grieve alone. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Lord, my friend cannot see past the pain right now, and hope feels like a word for other people. But I am holding hope for them until they are strong enough to hold it themselves. Romans 15:13 says, "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." Fill my friend. Not with fake optimism or forced smiles but with the real, sturdy hope that comes from knowing death does not have the final word. You do. Plant small seeds of goodness in their days—a sunset that takes their breath away, a memory that makes them laugh instead of cry, a moment where they forget to be sad for just a second. Let those seeds grow into something they can stand on. Show them that choosing to live fully again is not a betrayal of the person they lost. It is the greatest tribute. In Jesus' name, Amen.
