Prayer for the Church

The church is not a building. It is the living, breathing body of Christ on earth. These prayers ask God to strengthen, purify, and empower His people for the mission.

A Prayer for the Church to Be Known by Its Love

Lord, Jesus said in John 13:35 that the world would know we are His disciples by our love for one another. I am going to be honest: that is not what the world sees right now. Too often we are known for what we are against, not who we are for. That has to change, and it starts with me. Teach Your church to love the way You loveβ€”extravagantly, sacrificially, and without conditions. Help us to love the person sitting next to us in the pew and the person who would never walk through our doors. Break down the cliques, the judgment, the quiet exclusion of anyone who does not fit our mold. Let the church be the safest place in town for the broken, the doubting, and the different. Make our love so compelling that people cannot explain it apart from You. If we get nothing else right, let us get this one thing right. In Jesus' name, Amen.

A Prayer for Bold Preaching and Faithful Teaching

Father, I pray for every pulpit, every Bible study, every small group, and every conversation where Your Word is being taught. Give preachers and teachers the boldness of Peter at Pentecost and the tenderness of Jesus at the well. Acts 4:29 records the early church praying, "Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness." I am praying the same thing. Do not let Your church water down the gospel to avoid making people uncomfortable. But do not let us weaponize it either. The truth should be spoken in love, as Ephesians 4:15 says. Give our teachers a hunger for deep study and a gift for clear communication. Protect them from heresy, pride, and the pressure to perform. Let Your Word go forth and not return void. Change lives. Renew minds. Set captives free. The church does not need better marketing. It needs better preaching. In Jesus' name, Amen.

A Prayer for Church Unity Across Denominations

God, the body of Christ has splintered into thousands of denominations, and while I know we will never agree on everything, I hate how we treat each other sometimes. We fight over secondary issues while the world burns and people die without knowing You. That is not Your heart. In John 17:21, Jesus prayed "that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you." If unity was important enough for Jesus to pray for in His final hours, it should be important enough for us to pursue with everything we have. Help us to hold tightly to the essentials and hold loosely to the rest. Let Baptist and Pentecostal, Catholic and Protestant, megachurch and house church work together for the sake of the gospel. We are on the same team. Remind us. Let the watching world see a church that fights for each other, not against each other. In Jesus' name, Amen.

A Prayer for the Persecuted Church Around the World

Lord, right now there are brothers and sisters around the world who risk their lives to worship You. They meet in secret, hide their Bibles, and face imprisonment, torture, and death for refusing to deny Your name. I am ashamed of how easily I take my freedom for granted. Hebrews 13:3 says, "Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering." I remember them right now. Strengthen them with supernatural courage. Protect them from those who seek to destroy them. Provide for their families when breadwinners are taken away. Multiply their faith even under fire. And move in the hearts of their persecutors the way You moved in Paul'sβ€”turn enemies into brothers. Let the blood of the martyrs continue to be the seed of the church. We will not forget them. In Jesus' name, Amen.
