Prayer 1 — Absolute Allegiance to Christ

Lord Jesus, I declare that You are first in my life. Above my career, my relationships, my comfort, my plans, and my dreams—You come first. I pledge absolute allegiance to You and Your kingdom. Help me to mean this not just with my lips but with my whole heart and life. When other things compete for Your place, help me to recognize the battle and choose You. Give me strength to sacrifice what must be sacrificed and release what must be released so that nothing stands between me and full devotion to You. Let Your glory be my greatest treasure and Your will be my highest pursuit. Amen.

Matthew 6:33 — "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
Prayer 2 — Identifying and Removing Idols

Father, help me to honestly identify the idols in my life—the things I've given first place that rightfully belongs only to You. Help me to see the ambitions, relationships, possessions, or pursuits that have claimed Your throne in my heart. Give me courage to face the idols I've tolerated and the strength to remove them. Help me to understand that removing idols isn't about loss but about gaining freedom and restoring You to Your rightful place. Break my dependence on these false sources of security and satisfaction. As I remove idols, help me to fill the void with deeper relationship with You. Amen.

1 Corinthians 10:23-24 — "I have the right to do anything, you say—but not everything is beneficial. Not everything is constructive. Nobody should seek their own good, but the good of others."
Prayer 3 — Seeking God's Kingdom First

Almighty God, help me to seek Your kingdom first. Help me to understand that building Your kingdom is more important than building my own empire. Help me to find meaning and purpose not in personal success but in advancing Your purposes on earth. Help me to invest my time, talents, and resources into what matters eternally. Help me to view every opportunity through the lens of kingdom impact. When I'm faced with choices, help me to ask not "What benefits me most?" but "What serves Your kingdom best?" Let my life be a testimony to the fact that following You is the greatest treasure and the wisest investment. Amen.

Matthew 6:31-33 — "So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
Prayer 4 — Freedom from Fear and Anxiety

Lord, release me from the fear and anxiety that make me cling to things other than You. Free me from the illusion that security comes from possessions, relationships, status, or circumstances. Help me to understand that real security comes only from You. Help me to trust that when I put You first, You will care for my needs. Give me the courage to let go of what I can't control and to trust the things I fear to Your capable hands. Help me to experience the peace that comes from knowing that my life is in Your hands and that You have only good purposes for me. Amen.

Philippians 4:6-7 — "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
Prayer 5 — Wholehearted Devotion

God of my heart, help me to love You with my whole heart, soul, mind, and strength. Help me to give myself fully to knowing You, serving You, and glorifying You. Help me to lay aside every weight and entanglement that would hinder wholehearted devotion. Help me to understand that partial devotion is no devotion at all. Help me to see that the deepest satisfaction and greatest joy come not from anything else but from intimate relationship with You. As I put You first, may my life overflow with the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Amen.

Mark 12:29-30 — "The most important one, answered Jesus, is this: 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'"

About Putting God First

The first commandment is clear: love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. This foundational command is repeated throughout Scripture because it's essential to spiritual health. When God is first, everything else finds its proper place. When other things occupy God's rightful place, our entire life becomes disordered and dysfunctional.

Putting God first isn't about external performance or religious duty. It's about the deepest reorientation of your heart—a reorganization of your loves, loyalties, and pursuits. It means that when making decisions, your primary question isn't "What benefits me most?" or "What feels good?" but "What honors God and advances His kingdom?"

Many believers struggle with putting God first because we've been shaped by a culture that teaches us to put ourselves first. We're told to pursue our dreams, maximize our pleasure, protect our interests, and build our own kingdoms. But Jesus taught something radically different: lose your life to gain it, die to yourself to live in Him, seek first His kingdom and trust that He'll provide.

When you genuinely put God first, something shifts. You experience freedom because you're no longer enslaved to earning God's approval through achievement. You experience peace because your security doesn't depend on circumstances. You experience joy because you're connected to the source of all joy. You experience purpose because your life is aligned with eternal significance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does putting God first mean neglecting my family?

No. God designed family relationships and values them deeply. Putting God first means putting Him above even family—which paradoxically makes you a better family member. When you're rightly related to God, you have the wisdom, patience, and love needed to care well for your family.

Can I balance God with other important priorities?

Putting God first doesn't mean having no other priorities; it means organizing all other priorities around your primary commitment to God. When He's truly first, other good things—family, work, friendships—fall into healthy perspective and you engage them rightly.

How do I know if something has become an idol?

If you're anxious when it's threatened, devastated when you lose it, dependent on it for happiness, or willing to compromise your faith for it, it's likely an idol. Ask yourself: "Would I sacrifice this for God if He asked?" Your answer reveals its true place in your heart.
