Open Prayer Copilot App →Sovereign Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word, for my eyes have seen the salvation which You have prepared in the sight of all peoples. I have waited faithfully for the fulfillment of Your promise. I have believed Your word though the fulfillment seemed long in coming. Now I have seen it with my own eyes. I have encountered Jesus, the Messiah, the promised salvation. My life's deepest longing is fulfilled. I can rest now, knowing that what I was promised has come to pass. Thank You for allowing me to witness this day. Amen.
Father, I praise You that Your salvation is not limited to one nation or one people. Jesus is a light for revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of Your people Israel. Your salvation extends to all—both Jews and Gentiles, both those near and those far off. This salvation is for the whole world, for all who believe. I thank You for Your universal grace that has made salvation available to all peoples. Help me to share this gospel with all nations. Help me to understand that the salvation I've received is meant to overflow to everyone I encounter. Thank You for salvation that embraces the whole world. Amen.
Lord, Simeon spoke of the sword that would pierce Mary's soul and Jesus's heart in accomplishing our redemption. I acknowledge the cost of my salvation—the suffering of Christ, the pain borne by those who loved Him, the sacrifice of His life. I do not take this redemption for granted. I recognize that I am purchased at great price, redeemed not with silver or gold but with the precious blood of Christ. Help me to live in constant gratitude for this costly salvation. Help me to honor the sacrifice by living faithfully. Help me to never forget what it cost for my sins to be forgiven. Thank You for paying the price I could not pay. Amen.
God of peace, grant me the peace that Simeon experienced when his life's hope was fulfilled. Help me to know that my deepest longings will be satisfied in You. Help me to rest in the assurance that You keep Your promises. Help me to experience the peace that comes from knowing that Jesus is the source of salvation, that my life is secure in Him, that all things ultimately serve His redemptive purposes. Help me to let go of anxiety, to release my striving, and to rest in the peace that comes from encounter with Jesus. Grant me Simeon's peace. Amen.
Holy Spirit, open my eyes as You opened Simeon's eyes to recognize Jesus. Help me to see clearly that Jesus is the salvation of the world, the Messiah, the One who has come to redeem humanity. Help me to see past cultural resistance, past intellectual objections, past the ordinary appearance of His humanity to see His divine identity. Help me to encounter Jesus not just intellectually but experientially. Open my eyes to the fullness of His person, the reality of His resurrection, the power of His ongoing work. Let me see salvation. Let me respond with Simeon's joy and worship. Amen.

He was filled with the Holy Spirit and had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before seeing the Lord's Messiah. When Jesus was brought to the temple as an infant in accordance with the law of Moses, Simeon, moved by the Spirit, recognized this baby as the promised Savior. He took Jesus in his arms and praised God, offering what became known as the Nunc Dimittis.
What makes Simeon's encounter remarkable is that Jesus appeared ordinary—just an infant brought by peasant parents for temple dedication. Yet Simeon recognized Him. This recognition came not through outward signs but through the inner illumination of the Holy Spirit. Simeon had been watching, waiting, and when the moment came, the Spirit enabled him to see what others missed.
Simeon's prayer balances both joy and sorrow. He rejoiced at seeing the Messiah while also understanding that this salvation would come at great cost. He spoke prophetically of how this child would cause division and bring suffering. His prayer demonstrates a mature faith that rejoices in God's redemptive plan while understanding its complexity and cost.
The Nunc Dimittis, like the Benedictus, has been prayed by Christians for nearly two thousand years. It appears in Christian liturgy and hymnody worldwide. When you pray Simeon's prayer, you join believers throughout history in expressing the joy of encountering Jesus, the peace of knowing you are redeemed, and the assurance that you can entrust your life to God with confidence.
Simeon was righteous, devout, and filled with the Holy Spirit. He had been promised he would see the Messiah. When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple, the Holy Spirit moved upon Simeon and revealed to him that this infant was the promised Savior. His recognition came through spiritual insight, not natural observation.
Simeon waited his entire life for the fulfillment of God's promise. When it finally came, he was ready and recognized it immediately. His example shows the wisdom of patient faith—continuing to believe and watch even when the fulfillment seems long in coming, trusting that God will bring His promise to pass in the right time.
Meditate on the full prayer in Luke 2:29-35. Thank God for the salvation you've been given through Jesus. Ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to see salvation more clearly. Express your peace and joy in knowing Jesus. Ask Him to help you recognize His working in your life and world. Make this ancient prayer your own expression of faith.
