Prayers for Pride

Lay down self-reliance and embrace the humble posture that invites God's grace into every area of life.

A Prayer for a Humble Heart

Father, I confess that pride has a way of sneaking into my life without me even noticing. Sometimes it looks like self-sufficiency — believing I can handle everything on my own. Other times it looks like defensiveness — refusing to admit when I am wrong. Proverbs 16:18 warns that pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall, and I do not want to learn that lesson the hard way. Humble me, Lord. Not through humiliation, but through revelation — show me how small I am compared to Your greatness and how desperately I need You in every moment. James 4:6 says You oppose the proud but give grace to the humble. I want Your grace far more than I want to be right. Strip away the arrogance I have dressed up as confidence. Teach me to lead with openness, to receive correction without defensiveness, and to give credit where it truly belongs — to You. Everything I have is from Your hand. Help me never to forget that. Amen.

A Prayer to Recognize God's Sovereignty

Lord, I have been acting as though I am the author of my own story, taking credit for blessings that came from Your hand and trusting my own understanding over Your wisdom. But Micah 6:8 asks what You require of me — to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with You. That last part challenges me the most. Walking humbly means acknowledging that You are God and I am not. It means holding my plans loosely and trusting Yours completely. Forgive me for the times I have elevated my will above Yours or treated my success as self-made when every good gift comes from above. Philippians 2:3-4 calls me to value others above myself and to look not only to my own interests but to the interests of others. That requires a death to ego that I cannot accomplish in my own strength. So I ask for Your help. Dethrone the pride in my heart and enthrone Your Spirit. Let my life point to You and not to me. I surrender my need to be seen, praised, and validated. You alone are worthy. Amen.

A Prayer to Put Others First

Heavenly Father, pride makes everything about me — my needs, my opinions, my comfort. But Philippians 2:3-4 paints a picture of a life lived differently, where humility leads me to consider others as more important than myself. I want to live that way, but I need Your help because my flesh resists it constantly. When I am in a conversation, help me to listen instead of waiting for my turn to speak. When someone disagrees with me, help me to seek understanding instead of winning the argument. When I am tempted to one-up someone's story, seal my lips and let them have the spotlight. Jesus, You modeled perfect humility by washing Your disciples' feet and laying down Your life for people who did not deserve it. If the King of kings could serve, then I have no excuse for demanding to be served. Reshape my heart, Lord. Replace my self-centeredness with genuine compassion. Let me notice the people around me and meet them where they are, not where I think they should be. Amen.

A Prayer Against Spiritual Pride

God, this is a hard prayer to pray, but I sense You drawing it out of me. I have been spiritually proud — looking down on others for not knowing as much Scripture, not praying as often, or not living up to standards I set in my own mind. James 4:6 says You oppose the proud, and the thought of being opposed by You shakes me. I never want my faith to become a source of arrogance. Forgive me for every time I compared my spiritual journey to someone else's and came away feeling superior. Forgive me for using knowledge as a weapon instead of a gift. Proverbs 16:18 warns me that this path leads to destruction, and I want to turn around right now. The truth is, everything I know about You is because You revealed it to me — it is not something I figured out on my own. Keep me teachable, Lord. Keep me aware of how much I still do not know. Let my growing knowledge of You produce greater wonder and deeper humility, never arrogance. I want to be a learner for the rest of my life. Amen.
