Prayer for Depression

Depression can make God feel far away, but He is closest when you are at your lowest. These prayers give you words when you have none, and remind you that darkness is not the end of your story.

A Prayer When Everything Feels Numb

God, I don't feel anything right now. Not sadness, not joy, not anger — just emptiness. It's like someone turned the color off in my life and everything is gray. I go through the motions but nothing connects. I smile when I'm supposed to and say I'm fine, but I'm not fine. I'm not even sure how to pray, which is why I'm grateful Romans 8:26 says the Spirit helps me in my weakness and intercedes for me with groans that words cannot express. Pray for me right now, Holy Spirit, because I don't have the words. I know this numbness isn't who I am. It's not who You made me to be. Ezekiel 37:5-6 records Your promise to put breath into dry bones and make them live again. I feel like dry bones right now. Breathe on me. I'm not asking for everything to be fixed overnight. I'm asking for one flicker of light in this darkness. One moment where I feel alive again. Psalm 34:18 says You are close to the brokenhearted. Be close. In Jesus' name, Amen.

A Prayer When Getting Out of Bed Feels Impossible

Lord, the alarm went off and I can't move. Not because I'm lazy — because the weight of existing feels like too much today. I know people wouldn't understand if I tried to explain it. How do you tell someone that breathing feels like a chore? But You understand. Psalm 139:1-3 says You have searched me and known me, You know when I sit and when I rise, You perceive my thoughts from afar. You know this isn't a choice. You know this is a battle. So fight for me today. If I can get my feet on the floor, would You carry me from there? I'm not asking for a day without struggle — I'm asking for enough strength for the next five minutes. Then the five minutes after that. Psalm 18:28-29 says You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. With You I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. Today, getting up is my wall. Help me scale it. I'm choosing to trust You even when I can't feel You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

A Prayer When Depression Makes You Feel Worthless

Father, the lies are loud today. You're not enough. Nobody would notice if you disappeared. You're a burden. I know these aren't from You, but they feel so true that it's hard to argue with them. So I need You to argue for me. Remind me of what Your Word says about who I am. Ephesians 2:10 calls me Your workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works You prepared in advance. Psalm 139:14 says I am fearfully and wonderfully made, and Your works are wonderful. Isaiah 43:4 says I am precious and honored in Your sight, and You love me. I can't feel those truths right now, but I'm choosing to stand on them anyway. Depression is a liar, and Your Word is the truth. I may not feel valuable, but feelings aren't facts. The fact is You sent Your Son for me — that's how much I'm worth. John 3:16 makes that unmistakably clear. On the days when I can't believe in myself, help me believe in what You believe about me. That's enough. In Jesus' name, Amen.

A Prayer for the Courage to Ask for Help

God, I've been trying to handle this alone and it's not working. I know I need help — real help, from people who know how to walk through this — but asking feels terrifying. What if they judge me? What if they think my faith isn't strong enough? But You never intended for me to fight alone. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says two are better than one, because if either of them falls down, one can help the other up. I've fallen down, and I need someone to help me up. Give me the courage to reach out — to a counselor, a pastor, a trusted friend, a doctor. Asking for help isn't weakness; it's wisdom. Proverbs 12:15 says the way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice. I want to be wise, even when it's uncomfortable. Lead me to the right people — those who will point me back to You while also giving me practical tools for this journey. Galatians 6:2 says to carry each other's burdens, and in this way fulfill the law of Christ. Help me let someone carry mine. In Jesus' name, Amen.
