Many believers struggle with two dangerous extremes: timid prayer that barely asks because we're afraid of disappointment, or formulaic "name it and claim it" prayer that treats God like a vending machine. The biblical model is neither. It is bold, persistent, Scripture-anchored, and surrendered.
Begin by grounding your healing prayer in who God is. He is Jehovah Rapha — literally "the Lord your healer" (Exodus 15:26). This is not merely something God does; it is part of His name, His identity. You are not asking God to step outside His character when you ask for healing. You are asking Him to act in accordance with who He has revealed Himself to be.
Be specific in what you ask. Don't just pray "God bless them with healing" — name the illness, the organ, the symptom. God already knows, of course, but specificity in prayer keeps us present and engaged rather than offering vague requests as formalities. Jesus asked a blind man "What do you want me to do for you?" (Mark 10:51) — not because He didn't know, but because articulation is part of faith.
Pray for the whole person. Physical illness always has emotional and spiritual dimensions. Someone with a serious diagnosis needs healing of the fear that accompanies it. They need peace, hope, and the sense that God has not abandoned them. Pray for their sleep, their appetite, their relationships, their relationship with God through this trial — not only for the resolution of clinical symptoms.
Persist in prayer. The parable of the persistent widow (Luke 18:1-8) teaches us to keep praying and not give up. Persistent prayer is not about wearing God down; it is about maintaining our own faith and keeping our hearts turned toward Him while we wait. It is also a form of spiritual warfare — continuing to stand in faith against discouragement, hopelessness, and the enemy's lies that God doesn't care or can't help.
Involve community when appropriate. James 5:14 specifically calls on the elders of the church to pray over the sick with anointing of oil. There is something about communal, faith-filled, embodied prayer that Scripture values. If you are seriously ill, consider reaching out to spiritually mature people in your church to pray with you in person.
Scripture consistently presents God as a healing God. In the Old Testament, healing is part of the Mosaic covenant blessing — obedience to God is linked with health and life (Deuteronomy 7:15). Isaiah 53:4-5 prophesies that the Messiah would take on our infirmities and that by His wounds we would be healed — a passage the New Testament applies both to spiritual salvation and physical healing (Matthew 8:17, 1 Peter 2:24).
In the Gospels, healing ministry is inseparable from Jesus's proclamation of the Kingdom. He healed blindness, leprosy, paralysis, fever, bleeding disorders, and raised the dead. He commissioned His disciples to heal (Matthew 10:1), and that commission extended to the early church (Acts 3:6, James 5:14-16). His purposes may be at work in ways you cannot see. Paul's unanswered prayer for physical healing led to one of Scripture's most profound teachings on grace (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). Hezekiah prayed for healing when death seemed certain — and God granted fifteen more years (Isaiah 38). Keep praying. Keep trusting. And keep worshiping even when the breakthrough hasn't come.

God is fully able to heal any illness — Scripture affirms He is Jehovah Rapha, "the Lord who heals" (Exodus 15:26). Jesus healed all who came to Him during His earthly ministry.
