A Prayer for First Responders

Lord, the call came in and we're heading into a situation where people are in danger and the outcome is uncertain. I'm putting on my gear knowing that fire doesn't care about courage or training—it kills indiscriminately. I'm choosing to run toward what everyone else is running away from. Isaiah 41 says "Do not fear, for I am with you," and I'm counting on that promise today. Protect me from injury. Guide my decisions so I know when to go in and when to pull back. Help me see the people I'm trying to save, not the danger. And if something happens to me, protect my family. My spouse and children need to know that I'm willing to do this, but they also need to know that You've got me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Father, I arrive at people's worst moments. I see them at their most vulnerable, their most desperate. I absorb their trauma, their pain, their families' anguish. I go to overdoses, I deliver babies, I tell people their loved ones didn't make it. And then I'm expected to go to the next call and do it all over again. The cumulative weight of other people's tragedy sits in my chest. I'm developing compassion fatigue. I'm having trouble connecting with joy because I spend my days with people in the depths of despair. Help me process this weight. Help me remember that I can't save everyone and that's not my job—my job is to show up with my skills and my heart. Help me find ways to decompress that actually work. And help me believe that my presence in people's darkest moments matters, even when they don't survive. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Lord, today tested everything I am and everything I believe. I responded to a mass casualty incident where there were more people needing help than I could possibly help. I had to make impossible decisions about who to treat first. I couldn't save everyone. People died while I was trying to save someone else. And now I'm left wondering if I made the right calls, if I could have done something differently, if I failed them somehow. Help me accept that this wasn't a failure—it was the natural result of a catastrophic event. Help me honor the people I couldn't save while celebrating the ones I did. Help me process this trauma in healthy ways. And help my community recover from what happened. Give wisdom to the leaders trying to figure out what comes next. In Jesus' name, Amen.

God, I'm experiencing flashbacks to calls I responded to months or years ago. A certain sound or smell takes me back to a moment where I felt helpless or terrified. I'm having nightmares. I'm irritable with the people I love. I'm hyper-vigilant. I can't turn it off. And I feel ashamed because I'm supposed to be tough, supposed to handle this job without falling apart. But PTSD isn't weakness—it's a wound. And I need help to heal it. Help me be honest about what I'm experiencing. Help me find a therapist who understands first responder trauma. Help me talk to my loved ones about what's going on inside my head. And help me believe that healing is possible, even when the wound feels permanent. You are close to the brokenhearted, and my spirit is broken. Restore me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Father, every time my loved one leaves for their shift, there's a small part of me that wonders if they're coming home. They work in a profession where death is possible, where danger is real. And while I'm proud of them, I'm terrified for them. I'm raising our children alone on nights they're working. I'm trying to explain to our kids why mommy or daddy isn't at the dinner table. I'm exhausted from being strong. But I'm also the support system they need. Help me be strong without being resentful. Help me support their calling without sacrificing my own wellbeing. Help me teach our children to be proud of their parent's sacrifice. And help me trust that You are protecting my loved one more faithfully than I ever could. In Jesus' name, Amen.
