A Prayer for Military Spouses

Lord, my spouse is leaving tonight and I don't know when I'll see them again. Months stretch ahead like an ocean I have to cross alone. I'm trying to be brave for the kids, trying to be supportive of their service, trying to believe this is the right thing to do. But inside I'm breaking. You promised to go before us and never forsake us, and I'm holding onto that promise tonight. Go before my spouse and keep them safe. Be with them in the danger and the boredom and the homesickness. Give them strength to do their job well. And stay with me. I don't need You to make this easy—I need You to make it bearable. Be my presence when they're absent. Be my strength when I'm at my breaking point. Be the father and mother to our children when I can't be both. And bring them home. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Father, I'm doing the work of two parents with the emotional support of neither. I'm making all the decisions about our children's education, discipline, and development. I'm handling emergencies alone. I'm checking the locks at night. I'm breaking up fights and attending school conferences and kissing scraped knees. And I'm doing it all while maintaining the structure of our household so that when my spouse comes home, it feels like something to come home to. I'm exhausted. I'm lonely. I'm resentful sometimes that my spouse gets to do one job while I'm doing three. But I love them and I'm committed to this. Help me carry what I'm carrying without being crushed by it. Give me wisdom in parenting decisions. Give me community with other military spouses who understand this unique loneliness. And help my children remember their parent while they're gone. God, I can't sleep because my mind won't stop thinking about the dangers my spouse is facing. I'm imagining worst-case scenarios. I'm checking my phone for messages every few minutes. I'm catastrophizing in ways I can't control. I know they're trained and equipped, but training doesn't stop everything. And I'm terrified. The anxiety is suffocating. I lie awake at night imagining the phone calls I never want to receive. Help me distinguish between worry that I can control and outcomes that I can't. Help me pray instead of panic. Help me process these fears in healthy ways rather than letting them consume me. You promise that You will never leave or forsake us, but in these dark hours, that promise feels distant. Help me feel Your presence. Calm my racing mind. And protect my spouse from the actual dangers they face. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Lord, my spouse is finally home and it's supposed to be a beautiful reunion, but it's complicated. They've changed. I've changed. We don't fit together the way we did before. There's distance between us that I didn't expect. They're struggling with what they experienced. I'm struggling with the weight of what I carried. Our children don't quite know this version of their parent. We're trying to rebuild what separation broke. And I feel guilty for not being more grateful that they're home safe. Help us navigate this reintegration with grace and patience. Help us remember that we chose this marriage before the military, and we can choose it again now. Help us communicate about the hard things. Help us find our rhythm again, even if it's a different rhythm than before. And help me be compassionate with the person my spouse has become while they've been away. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Father, I'm at the end of myself. I've been strong for so long that I don't remember what weak feels like anymore. But I'm here now. I'm burned out. I'm resentful. I'm wondering if I can do this anymore. The deployments keep coming and my spouse is committed to this service, but I didn't sign up to be military—I signed up to be married. And the two feel incompatible right now. I love them and I'm drowning. Help me be honest about how hard this is. Help me ask for help without feeling like I'm failing. Help me decide if I can continue in this marriage on these terms, or if I need to have a hard conversation about what I can and cannot sustain. Either way, give me the strength to be honest. You promise to sustain us, but I can't access that sustenance right now. Help me find a way back to You. Help me find community with other military spouses. Help me know that my limits are not a failure—they're a message that something needs to change. In Jesus' name, Amen.
