A Prayer for Missionaries

Lord, this person is stepping into the unknown. They are leaving behind everything familiar — their language, their culture, their loved ones, their sense of belonging. They are answering Your call, but the cost is real. I pray for Your protection as they travel. Guard them physically from harm and sickness. Protect them emotionally from the culture shock and loneliness that will come. Give them courage when the doubts creep in. Connect them with a team that will become family. Give them breakthrough in language learning — let words come faster than expected. Most importantly, let them experience Your presence so intimately that they never doubt they made the right choice. Let their sacrifice bear fruit. As Matthew 28:19 calls them, let them go and make disciples. Let the first years be marked by encounters with seekers. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Father, this missionary has been at it for years. The work is harder than they imagined. Breakthrough is slower. Results are measured and often invisible. They are tired physically, emotionally, and spiritually. They are questioning whether their sacrifice has meant anything. They are wondering if they heard You correctly when they felt called to this place and this work. I pray for a renewal of vision. Remind them of the calling that brought them here. Show them fruit they cannot see — changed hearts, seeds planted that will bear fruit for generations. Protect them from burnout by giving them true rest and restoration. Bring them people or resources or encouragement in exactly the way they need it. Help them to remember that their worth is not determined by visible results but by faithfulness. Sustain them. Jesus, I lift up the children who are growing up in the mission field. They live between two worlds, fully belonging to neither. They speak languages that others do not speak. They understand cultures most kids their age never will. But they also miss home. They miss grandparents. They miss friends from the place they will never return to. The cultural confusion and identity questions will haunt them for years. I pray that these missionary kids would not become casualties of their parents' calling but would be shaped by it for good. Give their parents wisdom to protect them while not limiting their growth. Surround them with mentors and communities that will love them. Help them to see their unique position not as a loss but as a gift. Let them grow up secure in Christ even as they navigate cultural complexity. And let their childhood sacrifice produce in them a heart for the nations. In Jesus' name, Amen.

God, there are peoples who have never heard the gospel — entire communities where no one has presented the claims of Christ with clarity. And You have sent workers to them. These missionaries are planting churches in hostile soil. They are translating Scripture into languages that have no written form. They are building relationships with people who initially distrust them. I pray for breakthrough in these unreached places. Open doors that seem shut. Soften hearts that are resistant. Give Your workers supernatural wisdom for discipleship in these contexts. Protect them from disease, from opposition, from the despair that comes when progress seems impossible. And let the gospel bear fruit. Let churches grow. Let movements begin. Let these unreached peoples become reached through the faithful prayers and work of those You have sent. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Lord, this missionary has come home, and home no longer feels like home. Everything feels strange. The abundance confuses them. The conversations seem shallow. The concerns feel trivial after what they witnessed on the field. Their friends do not understand what they have been through. They cannot sleep without hearing the night sounds of their adopted country. They feel guilty for being safe when others they love remain in danger. I pray for healing and reorientation. Help them to see that coming home is not a failure but a new assignment. Give them a platform to share what they have learned and seen. Use them to send others. Let them find community with other returned missionaries who understand. Give them patience with a home country that will never fully grasp what they have experienced. And let them not lose the passion and perspective that the mission field gave them. In Jesus' name, Amen.
