A Prayer for Nurses

Lord, I'm about to enter another night shift knowing I won't sleep well when I get home. My body is already exhausted, but the hospital needs nurses and I've chosen this calling. Help me show up with my whole heart tonight, remembering that whatever I do, I do it as if working for You. Give my hands steadiness and my mind clarity. Let me not make careless mistakes when someone's life depends on my attention. Give me compassion for patients who are scared and families who are desperate. And when the night is long and nothing goes according to plan, help me remember that I'm not responsible for their outcomes—only for my faithful care. Keep me safe. Protect me from injury and infection. And when I get home, help me sleep deeply so I can come back and do this again. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Father, someone died on my shift today. I did everything right and they still died. I knew it was coming but knowing didn't prepare me for the weight of it. I held their hand. I was there at the end because their family couldn't be. This is the sacred part of nursing that no one talks about: being present at the threshold between life and death. It honored me and broke me at the same time. I carry this death home with me. Help me not carry guilt. I did what I could do. Now help me grieve well and rest in the truth that You hold what comes next. The person I cared for is not suffering anymore. They're at peace. Help me find peace too. And tomorrow I'll go back and care for other people facing their own mortality. Give me the grace to do that without becoming hardened. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Lord, I'm running on empty. I've given so much compassion—to patients, to families, to the system that demands more than I can give—that I don't have any left for myself. I'm burnt out in ways I'm afraid to admit. I don't feel like caring anymore. I'm just going through the motions. And I hate that about myself because I came into nursing to make a difference. Help me understand that burnout isn't a moral failure; it's a sign that I need rest and boundaries. Help me be honest about my limits. Give me permission to care for myself the way I care for others. And if my compassion needs to be restored, help me take time to let it be. I cannot pour from an empty well. Help me get well. And help me remember that even when I'm exhausted, my presence still matters, my work still counts, and my limitations are not a reflection of my worth. In Jesus' name, Amen.

God, I'm responsible for keeping people alive who are on the edge of death. The monitor alarms never stop. The families are terrified. The other nurses are struggling as much as I am. We're short-staffed and over-tasked and doing work that should never be done this way. But people are alive because of what we're doing, and I can't abandon them. I'm angry at a system that asks heroes to be ordinary humans. I'm afraid I'll miss something critical. I'm tired in a way that sleep can't fix. Give me supernatural strength for this impossible shift. Give me the wisdom to know what's most important when everything feels urgent. Give me the emotional resilience to see suffering all day and still go home and love my own family. And help the people who make decisions about healthcare understand what you're asking of the nurses on the front lines. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Father, I thank You for nurses. For every nurse who stayed in the profession when they could have left. For every nurse who chose difficult shifts and impossible situations because they believed their work mattered. For every nurse who has held a stranger's hand at the moment of death. For every nurse who became a healer even though the healthcare system broke them down. For every nurse who treats people with dignity when the world has stripped it away. Thank You for their sacrifice, their skill, their sacred work. Bless them. Protect them. Help them know how much their calling matters.
