A Prayer for the Persecuted Church

Father, right now, at this very moment, believers sit in prison cells because they refused to renounce Jesus. They are cold. They are hungry. They are alone. Some have been tortured. Some may not see freedom again in this lifetime. I cannot free them, but I can carry them before You. Strengthen them where they are weak. Give them peace that transcends understanding in the midst of their anguish. Let them know they are not forgotten. Protect their minds from despair and their spirits from bitterness. If their bodies suffer, guard their faith. Let their imprisonment become a testimony to Your faithfulness. Work in the hearts of their persecutors. Soften what has hardened against You. And if freedom is Your will, make a way where there seems to be no way. But above all, let these imprisoned brothers and sisters know that in their suffering, they are closest to the heart of Jesus. In His name, Amen.

Jesus, I lift up the churches that cannot meet openly, that must gather in basements and homes and hidden places. Their meetings are not comfortable or convenient — they are dangerous. Yet they come. They worship in whispers. They study Your Word in secret. They take the Eucharist knowing it could cost everything. Give them wisdom to avoid detection. Guard the locations where they meet. Protect the leaders who shepherd these flocks. Unite them with unbreakable bonds of love and trust. Equip them to pass faith to the next generation even when it cannot be taught openly. Let their faith be uncompromising, their love for You untainted by compromise. And increase them. Let the underground church grow and multiply. As Matthew 5:10 promises, blessed are those persecuted for righteousness. May these precious believers know that blessing viscerally. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Lord, some who have given their lives to You have lost their families in the process. Parents disown them. Spouses divorce them. Children are estranged from them. The cost of following You has been isolation from the very people who should have loved them unconditionally. I grieve this with them. I also know that You promised You would never leave them orphaned. Become family to those who have lost family. Bring them into communities of believers who will love them and stand with them. Heal the wounds of rejection. Free them from the shame they may carry for choosing You. Show them that the family of God is real and present. And in Your mercy, work reconciliation where it seems impossible. Turn the hearts of estranged parents back to their children. Restore the broken places. But even if earthly family remains broken, let Your family be enough. More than enough. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Father, Christians are fleeing for their lives. They have left everything — homes, possessions, land that belonged to their families for generations — because staying meant death or the surrender of their faith. Many are in refugee camps. Many are in transit. Many have lost loved ones along the way. I pray for protection over them as they journey to safety. Guard them from those who would exploit their vulnerability. Provide food, shelter, and medical care. Let them encounter Your people in the midst of their displacement — those who will welcome them, house them, and help them rebuild. Give them hope that exile is not permanent, that You have not abandoned them, that a future is still possible. For those who will resettle, open doors to safe countries. Give them grace to live as foreigners with dignity. And restore what was lost — not the homes and lands perhaps, but the sense of belonging, of being at home in Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

God, throughout history the blood of martyrs has watered the soil of faith and caused the church to flourish. Even today, those who die for You often do so knowing that their death will advance Your kingdom. But I pray that their sacrifice would not be wasted. Let their testimonies reach those who killed them. Let their perseverance convert the persecutors. Let their courage inspire believers who are wavering. Let their memory be honored and kept alive. Let their families find healing and even faith in the very God their loved ones died for. Let the nations that have persecuted Your church begin to see the futility and tragedy of what they have done. Use these martyrs as witnesses even from the grave. Let their sacrifice accomplish what their words alone could not. And comfort those left behind with the absolute certainty that their loved ones are in Your presence, their suffering ended, their victory complete. In Jesus' name, Amen.
