A Prayer for a Prodigal Son

My child has rejected everything I taught him about faith, about values, about God. He's living in ways that break my heart. He's surrounded himself with influences that pull him further away. He won't talk to me about it. He's defended his choices and cut off conversations about faith. Part of me wants to give up—to say, "You're an adult, these are your choices." But I can't. I can't stop loving him even though he's rejecting what I love most. God, I'm asking You to do what I can't do. Draw my son back. Soften the heart that has hardened. Let him feel the emptiness of what he's chasing. Give him mentors who speak truth. Let him encounter You in a way that convinces him. And while he's far away, protect him. In Jesus' name, Amen.

I've been standing at the window for so long. I've prayed. I've interceded. I've cried. I've hoped. I've watched other families' prodigals come home and I've wondered why not mine. The years have worn on my faith. I'm tired of praying and seeing no change. I'm tired of hoping and being disappointed. I'm tired of loving someone who rejects me and the God I love. God, I'm asking You to strengthen my faith when it's weak. Help me understand that even if my son never comes home, You are still good. Help me not equate the healing of my son with the reality of Your faithfulness. Help me continue to pray not because I expect change but because I believe You are worthy. Help me not lose faith in You even if my son never returns to faith in You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

My child is in a dangerous place. Not necessarily physically, but spiritually and morally. They're making choices that have consequences. They're in relationships with people who don't have their best interest in mind. They're exposed to temptations and influences that could destroy them. And they won't listen to me warn them. God, I'm asking You to protect my child even though they won't let me protect them. Guard them from the worst of the consequences of their choices. Don't let them get lost so far that they can't find their way home. Let there be people in their life who speak truth. Give them moments when they taste the emptiness of what they're pursuing. Protect them—not from all consequences because those might be what brings them home, but protect them from ultimate destruction. In Jesus' name, Amen.

I don't know when it will be. It might be years from now. But God, when my child finally comes home—whether they've hit bottom or they've simply come to their senses—I'm asking that I would respond like the father in Your parable. I'm asking that I would run to them, not walk. That I would embrace them without lecturing them. That I would celebrate their return without making them explain or defend or earn their way back. Help me in that moment to reflect Your heart—a heart that delights in the return of the lost child. Help me put on the robe of restored relationship, not make them grovel. Help me kill the fatted calf and throw a party because someone who was dead has come alive. In Jesus' name, Amen.

This is the deepest fear. Not just that my child is lost now, but that they might be eternally lost. That the choices they're making now could result in an eternity separated from God and separated from me. That I could raise them, love them, pray for them, and still not spend eternity with them. God, this fear is suffocating me. Help me release my child into Your hands completely. Help me understand that even in this, You have not lost control. Help me trust that You have a longer view than I do. Help me believe that it's not too late, that Your patience is infinite, that resurrection is always possible. Help me pray for my child's salvation with the certainty that nothing is impossible for You. And help me trust that even if I cannot see what the end will be, You already do. In Jesus' name, Amen.
