A Prayer for Retirement

God, today is the last day. After all these years, I'm closing this chapter. I've given my life to this work — my time, my energy, my best thinking. Part of me is so ready to be done. And part of me is grieving. This job became a big part of who I am. Tomorrow, I won't have the title that defined me. I won't have the structure that ordered my days. I won't have the colleagues who became friends. Help me grieve what's being released while also celebrating what was. Help me thank You for the work I was able to do, the people I got to know, the difference I hopefully made. And help me step into what's next with anticipation instead of fear. According to Psalm 92:14, I'll still bear fruit in this season. Help me believe that. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Father, I don't know who I am without my job. That's the scary truth I'm facing now that I'm retired. My career was my identity. It gave my life meaning and structure and purpose. And now that it's gone, I feel untethered. I'm asking You to help me discover the parts of myself that exist outside of work. I'm asking You to show me new callings, new ways to contribute, new ways to matter. I'm asking You to reveal what You've been preparing me for all these years — the volunteer work, the mentoring, the community involvement, the rest that restores my soul. Help me see this season not as a loss of purpose but as a freedom to pursue purpose that's purely about serving You, not about achievement or accolades. In Jesus' name, Amen.

God, I'm supposed to rest now. Everyone says "You've earned it, you deserve it, relax." But resting without a sense of purpose feels like laziness. I feel guilty for sleeping in. I feel like I should be doing something, accomplishing something, producing something. Help me reframe rest. Help me understand that rest is not idleness — it's restoration. It's how I steward this body and mind You've given me. It's how I remember that my worth isn't tied to my productivity. Help me embrace rest without guilt. Help me find rhythm — times to work (whether that's volunteer work, hobbies, or service), and times to genuinely rest. Help me believe that I am valuable even when I'm not producing anything. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Jesus, I'm grateful. Grateful for the work I got to do, for the career I was given, for the ability to work and provide and contribute. Grateful for the colleagues who became friends, for the mentors who shaped me, for the opportunities to grow and learn. Grateful for the paycheck that allowed me to provide for my family. Grateful for the sense of accomplishment and purpose that work gave me. Grateful for the way work shaped my character and tested my faith. Grateful for the time I got to spend doing something meaningful. As I step into retirement, help me carry this gratitude forward. Help me look back with satisfaction, not regret. Help me celebrate what was without making it an idol. Help me use what I learned to serve in new ways. In Jesus' name, Amen.

God, You promise in Psalm 92 that even in old age we will bear fruit, that we will stay fresh and green. Help me believe that. Help me see retirement not as the end of my usefulness but as a new season of fruitfulness. Maybe my fruit now is mentoring the next generation. Maybe it's serving in my church or community. Maybe it's deepening relationships I didn't have time for before. Maybe it's pursuing interests I had to postpone. Maybe it's simply being present and available to those who need me. Whatever the fruit looks like, help me tend to it. Help me stay engaged and growing. Help me finish well. Help me prove that age and retirement don't diminish a person's capacity to make a difference. In Jesus' name, Amen.
