A Prayer for Unforgiveness

God, I'm not ready. The wound is still raw, and forgiveness feels like pretending none of it happened. I don't want to release this anger because it feels like the only justice I'll get. But You know the truth — You saw what happened, and You promise that every deed will be accounted for. Help me stop carrying the weight of an offense that is not mine to judge. Give me the grace to open my fist, not because what was done was small, but because holding it is destroying me. As it says in Matthew 6:14, when I forgive, You forgive me too. Free me from this prison. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Father, this person never apologized. They may never acknowledge what they did, and the unfairness of that gnaws at me. I find myself replaying their words, their actions, waiting for a repentance that may never come. But I'm learning that forgiveness is not dependent on their remorse — it's dependent on my freedom. I'm asking You to do in my heart what they will not do: take responsibility for what happened and move forward. Help me forgive without waiting for an apology that would make it easier. Show me that releasing them doesn't mean excusing them, but means releasing myself. In Jesus' name, Amen.

God, I thought I had let this go. I thought I had moved on, but today You showed me I've been holding a grudge in the quiet places of my heart. I've been fine on the surface while carrying resentment underneath, and I've let it poison my other relationships. Forgive me for the dishonesty of claiming forgiveness while hoarding hurt. Give me courage to face what I've been hiding from myself. You promise in 1 Peter 4:8 that love covers a multitude of sins. Let Your love cover what I've refused to release. Lord, if I forgive them, won't they think what they did was okay? Won't they get away with it? Help me understand that forgiveness is not absolution — only You can grant that. Forgiveness is me releasing my right to punish. It's me stepping aside so You can do the work of justice that is actually Yours, not mine. I've been so focused on making sure they face consequences that I haven't noticed I'm facing the consequence of unforgiveness — the hardening of my own heart. Jesus, You forgave me while I was still a sinner — while I was still causing harm, still making mistakes, still running from You. You didn't wait for me to get it right. You didn't demand I feel the full weight of my guilt. You took it. And now You're asking me to extend to others the same grace You extended to me. That's the only way this makes sense. Not because they deserve it or because I feel generous, but because I have been loved with a love I did not deserve. Help me forgive from that place of astonishment and gratitude.
