Prayer for Missionaries

How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news — cover your missionaries in prayer.

General Prayer for Missionaries

Father God, today I lift before You every man and woman who has said yes to the call to go — who has left the familiar and the comfortable to carry the name of Jesus to places and people who may have never heard it. What a holy and costly calling it is, and I do not take their sacrifice lightly. I pray that You would sustain them in body, mind, and spirit. Let them feel the strength of Your presence in a tangible way, especially on the hard days when the work seems slow and the fruit seems scarce. Remind them that the seeds they are planting will one day grow, and that no act of love in Your name is ever wasted. Provide for every practical need they have — housing, health, finances, transportation, language skills, and community. Surround them with faithful partners in ministry and with believers who will encourage and sharpen them. Protect them from isolation and discouragement. Lord, open wide the doors for the gospel wherever they are sent. Let hearts be prepared before they arrive and softened by Your Spirit while they are there. Use their obedience to write eternal stories in the lives of people who are waiting — even unknowingly — to hear the good news. Cover every missionary by name today, and let them know they are not forgotten by the church back home. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Prayer for a Missionary's Safety in a Hostile Region

Lord of angel armies, I come to You on behalf of those who carry the gospel into dark and dangerous places — into regions where the Name of Jesus is not just unwelcome but actively opposed. They have gone knowing the cost, and I stand with them through prayer because I believe that my prayers matter on the front lines. I ask You to be their shield and their rear guard. Deploy Your angels around them and around their homes, their vehicles, their places of ministry. Confuse the plans of any enemy — spiritual or physical — that rises against them. Give them discernment to navigate danger with wisdom, and give them a boldness that does not shrink back even under pressure. When threats come, let Your peace stand guard over their hearts and minds. When fear tries to creep in at night, let Your Word rise up in them as a weapon and a comfort. Let them know that You hem them in behind and before, and that nothing can touch them outside of Your sovereign hand. Father, I especially pray for those serving in countries where Christianity is criminalized — where meeting together is an act of courage. Protect Your underground church. Protect Your sent ones. Let Your name be carried to the ends of the earth, and let every one of Your servants return home safely when their work is complete. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Prayer for Open Hearts and Open Doors on the Mission Field

Heavenly Father, You are the one who opens and no one shuts, who shuts and no one opens. You hold the key to every heart and every door, and so I come to You asking You to fling them wide for the sake of the gospel. I pray for the missionaries who are pressing forward in places where the soil feels hard and the resistance feels strong. Remind them that it is Your Spirit who brings conviction and opens eyes — not their eloquence or strategy alone. Free them from the pressure to manufacture results and fill them instead with confident, joyful reliance on Your Spirit to do what only You can do. Prepare the hearts of the people they are reaching. Send dreams, send conversations, send moments of divine encounter that no human could have planned. Let curiosity rise in unlikely people. Let the walls that religion, tradition, and fear have built begin to crack. Let the soil that has never received the seed of the Word be softened by Your rain. And Father, open practical doors too — visas granted, language barriers broken, relationships formed, invitations extended, safe places to meet and teach and pray. Let everything work together to advance Your kingdom in this place. Raise up local believers who will carry the work long after the missionary moves on. Let the harvest be abundant and the glory entirely Yours. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Prayer for a Missionary's Family

Lord, today I want to pray not just for missionaries in the field but for the families who stand beside them and behind them — spouses, children, and parents who carry a unique kind of sacrifice that rarely gets acknowledged. Their faithfulness matters too, and I lift them before You now. For the children who have grown up between cultures and countries, who have said goodbye to friends more times than most kids do in a lifetime — Lord, let them know they are rooted in You. Give them a secure identity that is not shaken by transition. Protect them from resentment and fill them instead with a kingdom perspective on the extraordinary life they have been called to live. For the spouses who manage households in foreign places, who navigate unfamiliar systems and languages and customs while also supporting the mission — give them grace and joy for the day. Let them feel seen and celebrated. Restore them in the quiet moments. Let their own walk with You be deep and personal, not lost in the busyness of ministry life. For the parents and siblings left behind, who pray and worry and miss — comfort them. Give them peace when communication is sparse. Knit them together across the distance with love that does not thin with miles. And for every missionary carrying the weight of being far from aging parents or hurting family members — Lord, be their presence when they cannot be. Cover every family stretched across the globe for the sake of the gospel. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Prayer for Perseverance and Fruit in Long-Term Missions

Father, the mission field is not always a place of visible victories and rapid harvest. Many of Your faithful servants have labored for years — and sometimes decades — before seeing a single person come to faith. I want to pray today for those who are in the long and often unseen work of long-term missions, because their perseverance is a kind of miracle in itself. Sustain the missionaries who are walking through dry seasons — where prayers feel like they are hitting the ceiling, where the work is faithful but the fruit is not yet visible, where the temptation to give up or go home tugs at their hearts. Remind them that You never asked them to produce the harvest; You asked them to be faithful with the seed. And the harvest is coming. Refresh their vision, Lord. Take them back to the moment of their calling and let it burn afresh. Surround them with stories of what You are doing globally, to remind them that the kingdom is advancing even when their particular corner seems quiet. Send them a season of renewal — in prayer, in worship, in friendship, in joy — so they can go back to the work with full hearts. And where fruit is due to come, Lord, let it come. After years of faithful plowing and planting and watering, let the rain fall and the harvest begin. Let every sacrifice made in long-term missions be rewarded with eternal fruit. Let those who sow in tears reap with songs of joy. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Scripture to Stand On

Romans 10:15
"And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, 'How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!'"
Matthew 28:19–20
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
Colossians 4:3–4
"At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ... that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak."
