Prayer for Pastors

Lift up the shepherds God has placed in your life. These prayers intercede for their strength, wisdom, protection, and joy in ministry.

A General Prayer for Your Pastor

Lord God, I come before You with a grateful heart for the pastor You have placed in my life. You know the weight they carry — the sermons prepared in the quiet hours, the hospital visits, the counseling sessions, the long nights of intercession on behalf of others. You see every sacrifice that no one else does, and You hold every act of faithfulness in Your hand. I ask that You meet them today with a fresh outpouring of Your Spirit. Fill them with wisdom that goes beyond education and experience — that deep, settled knowing that only comes from walking closely with You. Guard their mind against doubt and discouragement. Give them ears to hear Your voice clearly above all the noise of ministry and expectation. Strengthen their body when weariness sets in. Surround them with godly, trustworthy people who speak truth in love. May they feel deeply loved by You, not simply useful to You. Remind them that they are Your child first and a pastor second, and that Your approval rests on them fully in Christ. May their love for Scripture stay alive and wonder-filled. May their love for people be genuine, patient, and enduring. And may they finish well — with integrity, with joy, and with the words of their Savior ringing in their ears: "Well done, good and faithful servant." In Jesus' name, Amen.

Prayer for a Pastor Under Spiritual Attack

Heavenly Father, I stand in the gap today for my pastor, who I believe is under spiritual attack. Your Word tells us that our battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12). The enemy targets shepherds because he knows that striking the shepherd can scatter the flock. I refuse to let that happen without a fight in prayer. Lord, I ask You to raise up a hedge of protection around my pastor right now — around their mind, their heart, their home, and their ministry. Where the enemy has planted seeds of doubt, discouragement, or despair, I ask You to uproot every one of them and replace them with the truth of Your Word. Where isolation has crept in, send community and belonging. Where exhaustion has settled into their bones, breathe fresh life. I ask that You expose every scheme the enemy is using — hidden temptations, relational wounds, toxic voices — and bring them into the light where they lose their power. Remind my pastor that greater is He who is in them than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4). Help them put on the full armor of God today. May they stand firm, not in their own strength, but in the mighty power of Christ who has already won the victory. Surround them with intercessors. Strengthen their resolve. Let them feel the prayers of the saints rising on their behalf. In Jesus' triumphant name, Amen.

Prayer for a Pastor's Marriage and Family

Lord Jesus, I lift up the family of my pastor to You today — the spouse who shares the calling and bears so much quietly, the children who grow up in the spotlight of church life, the home where the joys and pressures of ministry play out behind closed doors. You see it all, Lord. You know the late nights, the missed dinners, the family events rearranged around congregational needs. I pray that my pastor's marriage would be a sanctuary — a place of safety, laughter, honest conversation, and deep affection. Protect their union from the enemy's schemes. Guard them against resentment, disconnection, and the slow drift that busyness can bring. Help them prioritize each other well, knowing that a healthy marriage glorifies You and strengthens their ministry. Lord, I also ask for Your covering over their children. May those kids know they are cherished — not burdens to ministry, not simply pastor's kids with a role to perform, but beloved sons and daughters of the living God. Protect them from the unique pressures that come with their family's visibility. May they see in their parents not just servants of the church but men and women who genuinely love Jesus. Knit this family together in warmth, in faith, and in the kind of love that endures. And may their home be a place where Your presence is felt more than any Sunday service. In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer for a Burned-Out Pastor

Father God, I come to You on behalf of a pastor who is running on empty. You see the weariness — not just in their body but in their soul. The kind of tired that sleep doesn't fix. The kind of emptiness that comes from pouring out for years without being poured into. Lord, I know You understand this. Even Your Son withdrew to lonely places to pray. Even Elijah under the juniper tree needed rest and nourishment before he could hear Your still, small voice again. I pray that You would meet my pastor there — under whatever juniper tree they're hiding beneath — and speak tenderly to them. Tell them that they are not failing. Tell them that their value in Your kingdom is not measured in sermon downloads or attendance numbers. Tell them that You love them with an everlasting love that has nothing to do with their productivity. Lord, I ask that You grant them permission to rest — deep, guiltless, restorative rest. Send them people who will guard their margin and not fill every silence with a need. Renew their joy in You. Reignite the fire that called them into ministry in the first place. Refresh their wonder at the gospel. Heal whatever wounds ministry has left. And when they return to the work, may they carry the lightness of a soul that knows its belovedness. May they run and not grow weary; may they walk and not faint (Isaiah 40:31). In Jesus' name, Amen.

A Prayer of Blessing and Encouragement Over a Pastor

Lord, I come before You today not with a request born from crisis but from a full heart that simply wants to bless the pastor You have given our community. How grateful I am for the gift of someone who loves Your Word and loves Your people — who stands up week after week to point us toward Jesus, who shows up in our darkest seasons with grace and truth. I bless them, Lord. I bless the work of their hands and the words of their mouth. I bless their preparation — the long hours in study and prayer. I bless their delivery — may every word land exactly where You intend it. I bless their leadership — may it be marked by humility, vision, and courage. I bless their influence — may it ripple outward in ways they will never fully see this side of eternity. I pray that today they would receive a tangible encouragement — a word from You, a note from someone in the congregation, a moment of undeniable confirmation that they are exactly where You want them to be. May they walk in the joy of their calling. May the fruit of their ministry be evident and multiplying. May they look back on their years in ministry with deep gratitude, not regret. And on the day they stand before You, may they hear those precious words: "Well done, good and faithful servant — enter into the joy of your master." I love and honor this pastor, Lord. Keep them, bless them, and use them for Your glory. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Scriptures for Praying Over Pastors

"Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you." — Hebrews 13:17 (NIV)
"The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching." — 1 Timothy 5:17 (NIV)
"For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep." — Ezekiel 34:11–12 (NIV)
