A Prayer for Drug Addiction

God, I am praying for someone who is lost in active addiction. They may not want help. They may not believe help is possible. They may be convinced that the drug is the only thing that makes life bearable. I cannot reach them. I cannot save them. But You can. I am asking You to pursue them relentlessly. Let the consequence of their addiction grow painful enough that they become willing to change. Protect them from overdose even as they are harming themselves. Preserve their life for the day when they might say yes to help. Let them encounter Christians who will not enable or enable judgment but will simply love them and point them toward You. Plant seeds of hope that You will water and grow. If they will not seek help today, let them seek it tomorrow. But keep pursuing them until they are ready to be free. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Father, my child is addicted. I do not know when it started. I do not know how to fix it. I have tried everything I can think of. I have alternated between tough love and rescue missions. I have cried more than I thought possible. I have grieved the future I thought we would have. I have blamed myself. I have raged at the injustice of watching someone I love choose destruction. Help me to let go of the illusion that I can control this. Help me to set boundaries that are firm but loving. Connect me with resources to help me understand addiction — not to excuse my child but to see them with compassion. And if it is Your will, open my child's heart to seek recovery. But even if they never recover, help me to find peace and to preserve what relationship is possible. Heal my heart. Guide my other children who are watching this devastation. And give me faith that You are still at work even when I cannot see it. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Lord, I made it through. The physical pain is beginning to subside, but the mental and emotional pain is just starting. I have been stripped of the substance that was my coping mechanism for everything — pain, boredom, fear, joy, everything. I do not know how to exist without it. I do not know how to handle my thoughts, which are now clear and loud and largely focused on how much I want to use again. I am fragile. I am vulnerable. I am terrified. But I am also clean. I have not put anything in my body for these days and I am still alive. The world did not end. I am still here. As John 8:36 says, the Son sets free, and I am believing that for myself. Give me the tools to stay clean. Heal my brain. Connect me with people who will support me. Give me a reason to stay sober that goes beyond just not using. And give me one more day of clarity, one more day of strength, one more day of hope. In Jesus' name, Amen.

God, I relapsed. After all that time clean. After all the promises. After all the work. I used again. And now I am convinced that I am hopeless. I am convinced that I have lost my chance at recovery. I am convinced that You have given up on me. The shame is suffocating. The regret is paralyzing. And the despair is worse than the addiction itself because it makes me want to use again just to numb it. But I am praying this prayer because I do not want to believe the lie that I am beyond redemption. I do not want to believe that one relapse means I have failed completely. I want to believe that relapse can be a teacher, not a verdict. I want to believe that Your grace extends even to those who have broken covenant with You multiple times. So I am asking — again — for Your help. Not to condemn me but to restore me. Let this relapse be a wake-up call that points me back to recovery. Let me reach out for help instead of hiding in shame. And let me get back up and try again. In Jesus' name, Amen.

God, I want more than sobriety. I want complete freedom. I want my body healed from the damage the drugs have done. I want my brain restored to right thinking. I want my spirit reconnected to You. I want the obsession with the substance removed. I want to be able to see a trigger without automatically craving. I want to remember what joy feels like without needing a substance to enhance it. I want to walk into situations where drugs are present without panic. I want authentic relationships where I am not performing recovery but living it. That kind of comprehensive healing seems impossible, but then I remember that nothing is impossible with You. So I am asking for complete freedom — from my body up through my spirit. As I work a recovery program and take medications if needed and go to therapy and find community, I ask You to work in the ways that no human can. Heal what is broken. Restore what is lost. And make me into someone who does not just abstain from drugs but who genuinely loves the life I have without them. In Jesus' name, Amen.
